I am assuming the main reason for this is there are quite a lot of fake or imitation watches on the market place. Certain individuals then try to sell these off as being the genuine article. The simplest way to identify an Elgin watch is first to understand that the Elgin production dates were between and so anything that is dated outside this range would not have been made or produced by Elgin. For the purposes of easy identification my advice is to ignore the serial number that you will find on the case. Cases have been changed over the years and at the beginning many people bought the movement and then had a case made to fit it. The only time I ever look at a case is that once I have worked out the year the Elgin watch was made, then I try to see if the case it is in, has dates and age of a similar nature. The simplest way to identify an Elgin pocket watch is by the serial number on the movement.

For questions about pocket watches, contact: Although time keeping mechanisms have been around for thousands of years, the first mobile clocks did not appear until the s. Until that time, a clock’s mechanism was so large, heavy and ponderous, few people considered the possibility of a portable clock. Most clocks were huge and resided in churches or cathedrals. Counterbalances and weights to power clocks were usually made of stone blocks or metal.
In the s, Henry De Vick invented a clock for the royal palace in Paris with a pound. A hand-held timepiece was a ridiculous thought at that time. Inventing the portable clock would bring great advances to civilization. It was needed for the study of astronomy, physics, and for ship captains to calculate location – increasing the likelihood of the safe return of a ship, its cargo, and crew.

How to Open a Watch Case While opening a watch isn’t rocket science, a watch can be damaged if you try to open it incorrectly. Never use a screwdriver to try to open a case. If you really aren’t sure what to do, take it to one of your local jewelers and ask them to show you how to open it. While it is open, make sure you record everything written on the movement of the watch and the watch case.
These details can sometimes be important.
The Illinois Pocket Watch Company is well described in this story written in This was from a paper handed to me by a colleague who discovered it by chance several years ago.
Don’t worry — your e-mail address is totally secure. I promise to use it only to send you Clock Collecting Tips. There are so many styles and types of clocks, made by so many clock makers and from so many countries, that I was totally lost. Over many years, I have learned a lot. I have concentrated on the American clock companies for my collection, so there is much for me to learn about clocks from outside the US. The question I get most from the comment form on this web site is: Some people will see a clock at an antique store that would look good in a certain room of their house, and end up with it that way.
The last Elgin movement made in America was produced in In between, pinning an individual Elgin down to a specific year and model can be a bit of a chore. From the very beginning, Elgin was finishing and selling over watches per day and were working on thousands more. So, it isn’t surprising that they needed some way of organizing and classifying these watches to make it easier to manufacture, for marketing purposes and for watchmakers to order parts to repair them. These three needs overlapped, and in some cases conflicted with each other, more over, things changed as the decades went by.
The result is the somewhat complicated and confusing set of systems we find today. Over the years, Elgin used the following systems to classify their watches: Serial Numbers, organized into “runs” , such as the run of serial numbers from were all grade number watches. Grade Numbers , such as or , which were B. Grade Names , such as the B.

Brief History: Gruen Watch Company
This is probably the most common question watch collectors have. Sometimes it is easy to answer, and sometimes it is impossible. There have been a lot of watch manufacturing companies that have come and gone over the years. Many have gone out of business, while others destroyed records to save space. Some companies as with the Gruen Watch Company , even lost rocords to fire or other natural disaster. The companies are not to blame.

Waltham Pocket Watches for Sale If you are looking to purchase a watch from this manufacturer then there are a number of places where you will be able to find them. I always find the best place to be physical auction rooms in remote places. Here you can usually avoid avid collectors who will always push the price up. If you are lucky enough to do that then you can sneak under the radar and pick these up for a low price.
There is of course always eBay who sell a lot of these watches but you do need to exercise great care as I have seen quite a number of suspect Waltham watches on there. Personally I would only buy one here if there was some proof of authentication. Amazon also do a selection of watches and there are a few other random sites that also sell these which you can find by doing a simple search around the Internet. Always be wary before parting with any money and I would never do this unless there is some type of proof of authentication.

That always makes me smile.

Articles usually appear around the October anniversary of the destruction, after yet another announcement of plans to catalogue looted antiquities now overseas, or when Summer Palace items appear at foreign auction houses. Even the most outrageously distorted claims often go unrefuted by timid governments and cultural institutions, perhaps for fear of complicating more important diplomatic negotiations or voiding loan arrangements and cultural exchanges.
Museum public relations departments keep curators away from the press and mention of the Summer Palace is omitted from catalogue and cabinet label alike. Requests for a response to the Chinese campaign for repatriation of just about anything Chinese, with its insinuation that even legally purchased items are loot, are answered slowly, if at all.

A Hamilton US military “general purpose” watch from In keeping with similar watches of this type, the dial bears the “H3” mark which I think signifies the use of Tritium in the luminescent compound and the Radiation tri-foil symbol. The back of the watch bears the relevant military specification, part number and date information, together with the instruction that it should be disposed of as “radiation waste”.
This watch has an interesting life story! As I understand it, it was procured, along with many other watches, by the British MoD in the ‘s and was evaluated at Herstmonceux Castle at that time owned by the Admiralty for potential military use. In the 70’s, the watches used in the evaluation were sold and became part of a private collection. Ownership was then transferred to the author of a well-known book on military timepieces who, in , sold the watch on to another collector.
Later, the watch briefly appeared on eBay, but the buyer returned it to the seller as he thought it was too small for him, thus enabling me to acquire it instead: In the ‘s the British Ministry of Defence produced a standard specification for watches to be issued to the armed forces. This Longines also sometimes referred to as the “Greenlander” as it was supposedly used by members of the British North Greenland Expedition between and dates to although it appears to have had what I suspect is an MOD redial at a later date.

However, the AC J was never intended to be flown upside down, and so the maneuver cause the aircraft to ‘over-G’. In simple terms, that means the aircraft was put under strain that it was never meant to endure, exceeding the manufacturer’s stress limits. However, the entire aircraft had to be written off because turning it upside down violated ‘stress limits’ placed on the wings.
Investigators largely blamed pilot error for the incident, saying there had been the ‘wrong choice of action during an operation’. However, their report also found ‘instrument and warning systems issues, and poor procedural guidance and publications for the test team to follow’. It will replace the current AC U aircraft in use by AFSOC and is designed to carry more guided bombs than previous versions, which relied heavily on Howitzer-style cannons mounted on the side.
The AFSOC only took delivery of the first AC Js in earlier this year, and has been carrying out tests on them ever since, before the first are due to enter active service in
